Sharing Data Between Devices

When nobody at the venue has a connection, iRank can move a tournament’s data directly from one device to another — by QR code or by file. No internet is involved at any point.

What travels

Everything about the tournament, not just one part of it:

  • Tournament details
  • Teams and their lineups
  • The draw for each round
  • Ballots, including drafts in progress
  • Released rankings
  • Payment records, for those permitted to see them

Sending

Open the tournament and choose Transfer

On the pairing screen, press Transfer, then Prepare transfer.

Show the codes

A QR code appears. If there is more than one, they cycle automatically — hold the phone steady and let them rotate. The screen shows which code you are on.

Or save a file

Save as file writes a single .irank.json file you can send by Bluetooth, a USB cable, or a memory card.

Receiving

Open Transfer, then Receive

Choose Scan codes to use the camera, or Open a file if you were sent one.

Scan every code

The screen counts them as they arrive. Order does not matter. If a code is missed, keep scanning — the set completes when all of them are in.

Review before anything is applied

This is the important part. Nothing is applied until you say so.

The review screen

Incoming records are grouped by kind — ballots, pairings, teams — and each one is marked:

MarkingMeaning
NewYou do not have this record
Newer than yoursTheir copy is more recent
Older than yoursYours is more recent
Same as yoursNo difference

New and newer records are ticked for you. Anything that would replace something newer on your device is left unticked, and a warning tells you how many there are.

Tap any record to see your version and theirs side by side.

Take Accept all seriously. It includes records that would overwrite more recent work on your own device. The per-record view exists so you can take a judge’s ballots without also taking their older view of the draw.

Integrity

A transfer that arrives incomplete or altered is refused, not partially applied. Every record carries a checksum covering its contents — a ballot whose scores were changed after export will not import.

A bundle from a different tournament is also refused, as is one that came from the device you are standing on.
